This mural by Trevor Dickinson, which is found in the tunnel leading from Newcastle Beach to Pacific Park, is just such a superb iconic representation of Newcastle beach culture. From the roped fence separating the beach from the road (a very Newcastle thing), to the offshore coal hauling ships, queued up to enter the port, the single lost thong, and of course the surfboard-carrying bicycle. I also love the old style ice cream van, they are still around …
the glimpse of the Newcastle Baths pavilion …
And doesn’t my Giant just blend into this picture below? It’s hard to believe this is in a dark tunnel, it looks as if it is in the car park of the beach …

That last photo of your bike is precious! Nice mural. Thanks for the beach culture. It was 10F this morning on my walk. Brrr.
The weather is far from our typical summer weather here, Annie, it is staying in the low 20s, (celsius of course) which is much more pleasant than the usual high 30s we would get at this time of year!
I remember a friend had one of those 70s chopper bikes – they had such impossibly light steering! It’s a nice nostalgic mural in a kind of “Michael Bell & Reg Mombassa” style – I hadn’t seen it before.
My sister had one of them in the 70s too Peter, it eventually got sold at a garage sale, I could not imagine riding one any great distance. The mural is definitely worth a look.
