Restoring the Bennett – the highs and the lows

My restoration project is moving along quite nicely, but not without its hiccups, as can be expected with such a project. I used Brasso on the alloy parts with stunning results, here are the before pics (which I posted earlier) …and the after-Brasso photo …The head badge is alloy, before I was not sure if it was aluminium, but its response to the Brasso confirms it to be an alloy.

Seat post before …and after …There are some marks on it which are part of its “character”. Note I’ve also changed the saddle to one which will be more comfy until I get a Brooks.

I have also done some of the painting, with mixed results. Much of it looks wonderful …but there are parts of the paintwork which have bubbled…this bubbling does not seem to be related to the surface underneath, it has just randomly appeared in a few places. I have now run out of paint and am intending to sand these parts back then repaint them. I am hoping they still have the colour I chose in stock! I am also wondering about a clear top layer, which I was told was not necessary but I think it would protect the paint job better.

    Hi Vicki,
    Looking good, it’s hard to tell from the photos but the bubbling in the paint may be caused by grease or an oil film on the frame prior to painting. This cannot always be detected by eye until the paint is applied and then it shows up in various forms and cannot be removed by sanding and repainting nor by using other cleaners such as metho etc, if it is grease or traces of old polish it will have to be cleaned with wax and grease remover, maybe thinners or acetone will do the trick again it’s hard to say until looked at first hand, best wishes, Wayne.

    I cleaned the frame pretty thoroughly Wayne, I am fairly sure it is not grease, but the frame had been previously repainted to some extent and the quality of that paint may have a part to play in this.
