I love this pink Bella Ciao, a one of a kind in Newcastle! Its owner says she gets lots of comments on it. I especially like that it has so many ways to carry things: basket, floral panniers and a small front rack as well. Gorgeous and practical!
According to David Hembrow, who writes an excellent blog about cycling in the Netherlands, there are a number of factors which influence women to cycle. At least, that is how it works there in the Netherlands. It is generally accepted that women will only cycle when they perceive it is safe to do so, and that the percentage of women cyclists only becomes greater than that of men once there is a safe infrastructure to ride on. I recently wrote about the deploringly low number of women I saw during BikesCount in October this year. Seeing the number of women and girls on bikes lately, I have regained hope that there is a cycling resurgence among women around here. There has been an improvement in infrastructure, some of which I will write about soon, but also this is the holiday season and it is quite likely that women are more likely to cycle to the beach rather than to work, which is the target group of the recent BikesCount.
